Village of Villa Park Announces Appointment of Chief of Police
The Village of Villa Park is pleased to announce the employment of Ms. Denise McGrath as the Chief of Police. Ms. McGrath will commence her permanent position as Chief of Police on Monday, December 21, 2020.
Ms. McGrath earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Safety from Calumet College of St. Joseph and her Master of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Governors State University. Ms. McGrath completed training and is a graduate of the University of Illinois Police Training Institute, and is a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff & Command.
Ms. McGrath’s professional experience includes over 30 years of experience, primarily with the Homewood Police Department, where she began working as a tele-communicator and patrol officer. There she served as Field Training Coordinator, Detective Sergeant, and was promoted to Deputy Police Chief in 2012. Ms. McGrath has been involved with all aspects of police work, including but not limited to, community relations, major crimes, the Asset-Forfeiture Program with the Department of Homeland Security, and formulation of the Police Department’s annual budget. She has a strong background in internal and external investigations, and developed a training program to enhance officer expertise in use of force, de-escalation, implicit bias, scenario-based training, and other topics.
As a progressive administrator and manager, Ms. McGrath is dedicated to the badge that stands for service, pride, integrity and justice. She is the recipient of the Demonstrated Leader Award and the Cook County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Award of Merit, among others. She is committed to maintaining a vibrant and cohesive community where law enforcement is viewed in a positive light.
